You know, everybody always asks me
about Mr. Abalene. Well, to be honest with you, there never was a Mr.
Abalene. Abalene Termite & Pest Control
was established in
1927 by Mr. William A. Heydenreich. As I understand it, Abalene was
a franchise with offices throughout New Jersey. Then I guess Mr.
Heydenreich got tired of all the hectic everyday business dealings in
running a franchise operation and decided to sell off each location,
keeping only the Trenton site.
In the 1950's, my great Uncle Joseph A.
Schmidt went to work for Mr. Heydenreich as a service technician. In
fact, my uncle told me that one of his customers used to be Albert
Einstein. Anyway, around 1954 Mr. Heydenreich decided to sell the
Trenton location, so my Uncle and Herbert Sieling (Heydenreich's
nephew) decided to become partners and buy the business. They ran
the business together. My Uncle specialized in household pest control
and Herbert took care of termite control. They did this until
Herbert's death around 1967, then my Uncle took over the business as
Not having any children of his own, my
Uncle brought his nephew Ulrich H. Blumenthal (my father) into the
business in 1969 to learn the trade and keep Abalene Termite & Pest Control in
the family. My Uncle ran Abalene Termite & Pest Control until 1989 when he
decided to retire, at which time my father became the sole owner and
has been ever since. Unfortunately, my Uncle did not have a long
retirement; he passed away from cancer in 1995.
My story is not so complex. I've been
involved in pest control since I was knee high to a grasshopper, born
and bred if you will. During summer vacation from school I used to
work for Abalene Termite & Pest Control doing termite control and go along with
the other PCO's (pest control operator) on their routes, meeting the
customers and learning the tricks of the trade. I did this until
1985 when I graduated high school and joined the Navy for three
years. When I got out of the Navy in 1988 it was back to the bugs,
where I've been ever since. Only now I'm Vice President of
Abalene Termite & Pest Control, and who knows, when dad retires (maybe?) the
sprayer will get passed down to me.
